UROBACH

(demon Urobach, from Collin de Plancy's Dictionnaire Infernal, 1863)

Urobach is a demon illustrated by Collin de Plancy with a bedpan filled with hot coals, presumably to roast damned souls in hell. He is all ears, nose, eyes and mouth, indicating the possession of a keen set of senses, the better to appreciate the torments of his victims.

This creature may be the same as the demon Orobas, mentioned in the Goetia and in Reginald Scot's Discoverie of Witchcraft. Scot reported concerning this demon:

"Orobas is a great prince, he commeth foorth like a horsse, but when he putteth on him a mans idol, he talketh of divine vertue, he giveth true answers of things present, past, and to come, and of the divinitie, and of the creation, he deceiveth none, nor suffereth anie to be tempted, he giveth dignities and prelancies, and the favour of freends and foes, and hath rule over twentie legions."

If Urobach and Orobas began as the same demon, they appear to have diverged, since the appearance of the former provided by de Plancy scarcely corresponds to the noble description of the latter.
