ORIGINAL MAGIC ALPHABET

(original magic alphabet designed by Donald Tyson as an experiment)

This is an original magic alphabet that I created one afternoon after studying Aleister Crowley's Enochian Dagger Alphabet, which Crowley claimed to have seen in a vision while invoking the nineteenth Enochian Aether (see Crowley's Vision and the Voice, page 93).

The design requirements I set myself were to use no more than four straight line segments for each letter, avoiding all curves or angles other than ninety degrees, and to shape each letter in such a way that it can be rotated, inverted or reflected, yet still be recognized. I also limited myself to only a single horizontal bar for each letter, and chose to have the vertical lines crossing this bar be intersected only at their middle points. This is not quite so easy a matter as it might first seem. I had an enjoyable afternoon producing the result you see in the table pictured above.

I allowed myself the luxury of dots for punctuation marks, because in order to best fulfil their function, punctuation marks must stand out strongly from the text they modify. I decided to identify the zero with a single dot because it represents the most fundamental concept, the origin from which all other forms issue.

If this alphabet has a limitation, in a practical sense, it is that at first glance the letters appear to lack strong individual identities that make them stick easily in the memory. I'm afraid this is unavoidable when so rigorous a set of rules is used to construct a magic alphabet. It reduces the usefulness of this alphabet for actual communication, although it lends itself nicely to talismans and sigil-making.
