(Tree of the Sephiroth and its occult correspondences, as used by the Golden Dawn)
The Tree of the Sephiroth, more commonly known as the Tree of Life, is a complex symbol formed from ten circles or spheres that are joined by twenty-two channels or paths. It is one of the most important structures in modern Western magic, because it provides the relationship between several sets of occult symbols or qualities, most notable among them the Hebrew alphabet and the esoteric meanings for its letters, the numbers from one to ten and their meanings, the cards of the Tarot, the zodiac signs and planets of astrology, and the four Golden Dawn color scales.
The version of the Tree used in Western magic since the time of the Golden Dawn is considerably older than that organization, and in fact can be traced back at least as far as Athanasius Kircher's Oedipus Aegyptiacus, published in 1652. However, it is not the version of the Tree most commonly used in the traditional Jewish Kabbalah. The Kabbalah of Western magic is a subset of the traditional Kabbalah that has gone its own way in the hundred years or so since its introduction into the teachings of the Golden Dawn, and presently bears only a passing affiliation with the Jewish Kabbalah as studied by the rabbis.
The numbers from one to ten refer to the numbers of the ten spheres, or Sephiroth. The name of each Sephirah appears at the top of its circle. The numbers from eleven to thirty-two refer to the numbers of the channels or paths, which are related to the twenty-two trumps or Major Arcana of the Tarot. By contrast, the Sephiroth are related to the numbered cards of the Tarot, and the royal cards.
This version of the Tree is the usual Golden Dawn version. I have some disagreement with certain aspects of its construction, but I wished to present the Tree in its most common state for purposes of general reference. Note that it is usual to show the horizontal Path 27 crossing over the top of vertical Path 25; however, this would make it impossible to label Path 25, which is very short, with its Tarot trump, Temperance, so I have taken the liberty of placing Path 25 on top. This change has no esoteric significance.
