(demon Marchocias from Collin de Plancy's Dictionnaire Infernal, 1863)
The Goetia describes Marchocias (or Marchosias) as follows: "He is a Great and Mighty Marquis, appearing at first in the form of a Wolf having Gryphon's Wings, and a Serpent's Tail, and Vomiting Fire out of his mouth. But after a time, at the command of the Exorcist he putteth on the Shape of a Man. And he is a strong fighter. He was of the Order of Dominations. He governeth 30 Legions of Spirits. He told his Chief, who was Solomon, that after 1,200 years he had hopes to return unto the Seventh Heaven."
S. L. MacGregor Mathers, the leader of the Golden Dawn, prepared an edition of the Goetia for publication. He added an interesting footnote to this demon: "In one Codex of the seventeenth century, very badly written, it might be read 'Ox' instead of 'Wolf.'" Mathers' manuscript was published by Aleister Crowley, who remarked on this footnote: "For me he appeared always like an ox, and very dazed." Crowley was referring to Mathers himself, Crowley's former teacher (this type of humor is typical of Crowley, who could never resist a bad joke or pun), but it is likely that Crowley experimented with evoking most, if not all, of the demons described in the Goetia during his youthful studies as a member of the Golden Dawn. His mentor in the Golden Dawn, Allan Bennett, once accused the younger man of "dabbling with the Goetia" early in their relationship.
