GREMORY

(Gremory, from Collin de Plancy's Dictionnaire Infernal, 1863)

Gremory, also known as Gormory or Gemory or Gromory or Gamori, "is a strong and mightie duke, he appeareth like a faire woman, with a duchesse crownet about hir midle, riding on a camell, he answereth well and truelie of things present, past, and to come, and of treasure hid, and where it lieth: he procureth the love of women, especiallie of maids, and hath six and twentie legions." (Scot, Discoverie of Witchcraft, page 224)

Mathers has given the text "He is a Duke Strong and Powerful, and appeareth in the Form of a Beautiful Woman, with a Duchess's Crown tied about her waist, and riding on a Great Camel. His Office is to tell of all Things, Past, Present, and to Come; and of Treasures Hid, and what they lie in; and to procure the Love of Women both Young and Old." (Mathers, Goetia)

As nearly as I can determine from the various descriptions of this demon, she has a sort of tiara tied at her waist to serve as an ornamental belt. It seems silly to refer to the demon as a "he" in view of her feminine shape. It is true, demons cannot be said to possess a definite sex, but when they appear as women it makes sense to refer to them as female.

Collin de Plancy has shown this demon with a plume of feathers arising from a diadem at her forehead, and cow horns that resemble the two sides of a crescent moon. Note that the camel is a lunar beast. A transparent veil hangs down her back from her hair, but does not conceal her face. She appears to have flowers on her right shoulder and at her breast. She is not particularly attractive, in spite of her flattering description in the Goetia.
