THE GOETIA
Preliminary Invocation

Preliminary Invocation

Thee I invoke, the Bornless one.a
Thee, that didst create the Earth and the Heavens:
Thee, that didst create the Night and the day.
Thee, that didst create the darkness and the Light.
Thou art Osorronophris: Whom no man hath seen at any time.
Thou art Jäbas:
Thou art Iäpos:
Thou has distinguished between the just and the Unjust.
Thou didst make the female and the Male.
Thou didst produce the Seed and the Fruit.
Thou didst form Men to love one another, and to hate one another.

I am Mosheh Thy Prophet, unto Whom Thou didst commit Thy Mysteries, the Ceremonies of Ishrael.
Thou didst produce the moist and the dry, and that which nourisheth all created Life.
Hear Thou Me, for I am the Angel of Paphrö Osorronophris: this is Thy True Name, handed down to the Prophets of Ishrael.

NOTES

Note a: The title "Bornless One" has been translated elsewhere as "Headless One," which is to say, one who has no precursor or superior, one without a father and mother. The concept is similar to that held by the Pythagoreans toward the Greek goddess Athene, who in myth was said to have sprung fully formed from the forehead, or the thigh, of Zeus (thigh being a euphemism for penis among the ancient Greeks). The Pythagoreans associated her with the prime number seven, on the grounds that the perpetually virgin Athene was not generated by sexual union, and gave rise to nothing by sexual generation. Seven cannot be produced by multiplying any of the numbers from one to ten with any other number, nor will seven generate any number from one to ten when multiplied with any of the other numbers. Seven is the only number from one to ten that fulfills these conditions. For example, two cannot be generated by multiplication, but it generates other numbers (2X3=6). Nine will not generate any other number below ten by multiplication, but it can be generated (3X3=9). For the Pythagoreans, multiplication was the mathematical equivalent of procreation.

I am not sure whether Mathers or Crowley adapted this version of the Bornless Ritual. Crowley used it extensively, perhaps more than any other single ritual, and by constant association has made it his own, but Crowley derived most of his magic from Mathers and the practices of the Golden Dawn, and I would not be surprised to learn that this ritual was in circulation in some form among Mathers' disciples within the Second Order.

The ritual is not original, but was lifted whole from an ancient Egyptian text, and modified slightly. It appeared in Fragment of a Graeco-Egyptian Work upon Magic from a Papyrus in the British Museum translated by Charles Wycliffe Goodwin, which was published by Oxford Press in 1852. This publication predates by several decades Crowley's use of the ritual. The ritual is not a part of any version of the original manuscript copies of the Goetia, or of any other European grimoire. It was imposed upon the Goetia by Crowley as part of his own ritual procedure of demonic evocation. -- Tyson

Note b: These are some of the "barbarous words of invocation" that figure so prominently in Egyptian magical texts under the reign of the Ptolemies. They were meant to be sounded resonantly or vibrated on the voice by extending the Greek vowels. In their vowels lies their power. The meaning of many of the words had long since been forgotten at the period when they were used for magic. They are divine names from the pantheons of Egypt and perhaps other cultures. -- Tyson
