NOTES
Note a: The style is so affected in this opening passage, we can only conclude that Crowley was amusing himself at his reader's expense, and writing with tongue firmly in cheek.
The following renderings of the conjurations of the Goetia into a kind of phoenetic Enochian are of interest for the light they shed on Crowley's personal technique of goetic evocation, which he developed in 1898 shortly after joining the Golden Dawn. It may be assumed that he wished to integrate two aspects of his studies, the Enochian language and traditional spirit evocation, in his practical work, in the belief that Enochian words would lend greater power and authority to his evocations. This form of Enochian is what was vocalized by members of the Golden Dawn during their Enochian magical work. The precise spelling of these Enochian words is not so important as the sounds of the words, which were written in this way as a phonetic aid in speaking them aloud. Crowley probably derived this Enochian material from the papers of Allan Bennett (see The Goetia, edited by Hymenaeus Beta, Weiser, page 97, note 1).
The Enochian in the Goetia first edition of 1904 contains quite a few minor errors. For the most part, I have not corrected the text, but have reproduced it as it appears in the book. It is easy to get carried away when making corrections, even to the extent of losing the precise soundings of some of the Enochian words employed by Crowley. This I wished to avoid. Crowley used many of the errors in his magical work, and upon this reflection I decided to preserve them. I have made a few corrections where obvious typos occurred. Those who wish to correct the Enochian text will be greatly aided by The Complete Enochian Dictionary, by Donald C. Laycock, where the versions of the Enochian words used in the first edition of the Goetia are reproduced alongside the more correct forms of Enochian.
The original text appears in double lines, with the Enochian in Black Letter above and the English translation in normal typeface below. This is difficult to reproduce in HTML, and in any case, the correspondence between the Enochian and English texts is sometimes imprecise using this method. I have chosen to place the English in parentheses just after the Enochian word, or words, it translates. Rendering the Enochian into Black Letter type was a stupid thing for Crowley to do, since it made the Enochian almost unreadable, and indeed, undecipherable, and greatly increased the likelihood of errors in transcription. He did this in an effort to slow his readers down and force them to examine the Enochian words letter by letter. However, the grief it causes the reader is not justified by this function.
The original Enochian versions of the Keys transmitted by the Enochian angels to John Dee and Edward Kelley often omit many small connecting words such as "of," "the," "a," and so on. These are expressed in Enochian sentences through the relative placements of the words. Sometimes the same English word is expressed by two or more different Enochian words. For these reasons the translation may appear imprecise.
Crowley sounded out fully each Enochian letter when speaking Enochian. For example, the Enochian words zimz (vestures) and de (of) became for Crowley the compound zodimezoda (vestures of) -- that is, zod (z), i (i), me (m), zod (z), plus da (de), with the final "d" of zodimezod overlapping the initial "d" of de. The "e" of the Enochian word de was changed to an "a" by Crowley, probably to better express its pronunciation. -- Tyson
Note b: This cleansing prayer is in Latin, not Enochian. It is derived from the biblical Psalm 51:7. -- Tyson
Note c: The English translation for the Enochian word mir, which Crowley spelled mire, was omitted from the text. I have restored it in square brackets. -- Tyson
Note d: The word bia (voice, voices) is missing from Crowley's Enochian text. Crowley spelled this word bianu. -- Tyson
Note e: The English translation of the Enochian word eca, "therefore," is missing from the text and has been inserted in square brackets. -- Tyson
Note f: The name "Easu" is missing from the English translation, and has been inserted in square brackets. -- Tyson
Note g: This question mark appears in the text of the first edition of the Goetia, indicating that Crowley was unsure of his use of this Enochian word. -- Tyson
Note h: The Enochian words i eli appear in the Enochian text but are not noticed in the English text. I have inserted the translation "in the first" in square brackets. The reference is to the names of power spoken in the initial evocation. -- Tyson
Note i: The Enochian word ol is missing from the Enochian text. It has been added in square brackets. -- Tyson
Note 1: Or Gaap, Paimon, Zodimay, as the case may be. -- Crowley
Note j: The Enochian names for the other three points of the compass are variously inserted into the invocation as needed, depending on the region ruled by the spirit that is called. -- Tyson
Note k: The Enochian word das is not translated in this place in the English test. I have inserted the translation in square brackets. -- Tyson
Note l: The English translation of the Enochian word das is missing in this place, but has been inserted in square brackets. -- Tyson
Note m: The English translation for the Enochian ca-ol was missing, but has been inserted in square brackets. -- Tyson
Note 2: Knights - pu-imé. Prelates - tabaame. Earls - nazodapesad. Kings - roré. Dukes - obeloka. Presidents - balazodareji. Marquises - geraa. -- Crowley
Note n: The English translation of the Enochian word paida was missing, and has been replaced in square brackets. -- Tyson
