ASTAROT

(portrait of Astarot from Le veritable dragon rouge, 1822)

This demon derives his name from Astaroth. In the Red Dragon he is said to be a grand duke of hell, and is depicted sticking his tongue out as though to mock all rank and pretension. He may probably be identified with Astaroth.

A. E. Waite identified the image of this demon with the Olympic spirit of Tuesday, Phaleg -- see The Book of Ceremonial Magic, Plate 2, page 37. This popular image also appears on a seal in the Grimoire of Honorious that is attributed to Wednesday and the demon Astaroth -- see Waite's Book of Ceremonial Magic, page 289.
