Agares, or Agreas, is the first duke of hell under the power of the east. Reginald Scot wrote of him: "Agares, he commeth up mildlie in the likenes of a faire old man, riding upon a crocodile, and carrying a hawke on his fist; hee teacheth presentlie all maner of toongs, he fetcheth backe all such as runne awaie, and maketh them runne that stand still; he overthroweth all dignities supernaturall and temporall, hee maketh earthquakes, and is of the order of vertues, having under his regiment thirtie one legions."

The hawk, or goshawk, is not easy to distinguish on the demon's right fist, but if you look carefully you will make it out. It has a little plume on its head. Agares's spurs seem excessively vicious, but when we reflect that crocodiles are not usually bred for riding, and have thick hides, we see that they are probably necessary.
